Lost Love Locket
By Thomas Miller
Inside the locket is an image of a woman, his long lost love, whom he never thought he'd see again.
Thomas stares at the woman in the locket, a delicate beauty, her face painted with a profound sadness that speaks of a life that has been hard and unfulfilled. He closes his eyes, trying to fight through the tears that threaten to spill from the corners of his eyes, and takes a deep breath. He raises his arms and lets out a single, desperate yell that echoes for miles, across the empty land. He takes one last look at the woman in the locket, trying to memorize her features. He takes a few steps back, throws his arms forward, and jumps.
He falls, the wind rushing past him, crashing against his skin. Dark thoughts flood his mind, and he finds himself wishing it had been different, that he could have found a way to be with the woman in his locket, if only for a moment. He feels a deep sadness, a longing for something that can never be. He closes his eyes, surrendering to the fall.
Thomas wakes up, lying in an empty field, the stars shining around him. He looks around, confused, until he hears a distant sound, a song, slow and mournful. He follows the music, and finds himself in an old graveyard, shrouded in a thick fog. He finds himself standing in the middle of a cemetery, the graves lit up by the bright moonlight. He steps forward, and a figure shrouded in a long, dark cloak appears before him. It is a woman, her face pale, her hair tied back in a long braid, her eyes a deep and piercing blue. Thomas realizes with a start – it is the woman from his locket.
The woman slowly takes Thomas's hand, leading him away from the graveyard and into the fog, the music of a distant tango band playing in the background. She holds him close, and they slowly and silently dance, the stars and moon providing their only light as the night goes on. Thomas is filled with a deep sadness, an ache of remorse, and a longing for a life that could have been. The two of them slowly twist and turn, their movements in perfect harmony, until Thomas feels himself fading away. He looks up, and he can see his friends, their faces lit up with grief for him. He knows they will never understand the beauty of what he is experiencing at this moment, and a wave of sorrow crashes over him. He looks into the woman's eyes, and he sees a deep understanding, a profound knowledge of joy and sorrow, and he knows that he is where he needs to be. He smiles, and he closes his eyes, surrendering himself to the music and to the embrace of his long lost love.
